Transform Your Space: The Ultimate Guide to Choosing Decorative Cushions

Cushions are one of those things that seem so simple on the surface, and yet they have the power to completely transform a room. I've lost count of the number of times a customer has sent me a "before and after", the same sofa, the same walls, the same everything, and the only thing that's changed is the cushions. The difference is always remarkable. It's one of the reasons I love them so much, and why I've made them such a central part of what we do at Susi Bellamy!

If you've ever stood in front of a sofa wondering where on earth to begin, this guide is for you. There are no hard rules here,  just the things I've learned over years of working with colour, pattern and texture and genuinely believe make a difference

Start with what you already have

The best place to begin is not with the cushions themselves, but with the room around them. What colours are already present in your space? What's the tone - calm and neutral, bold and eclectic, warm and layered? Cushions should feel like they belong to a room, not like they've been dropped into it from somewhere else entirely

I always tell people to look for the colours that are already hiding in their space, in a rug, a piece of artwork, even the tones in a wooden floor and draw those out through their cushion choices. It creates a sense of intention, even if the overall look is relaxed and unfussy. The artwork in this scheme below inspired the upholstery and furnishings, continuing the colour and abstract feel

Think in odd numbers

This is one of those small things that makes a surprisingly big difference. Groups of three or five cushions almost always look more considered than pairs or even numbers. It creates a natural asymmetry that feels collected and lived-in rather than overly styled

Mix pattern with confidence

This is the area where I see people hesitate the most, and I completely understand why. Pattern mixing feels risky. But it is genuinely one of the most rewarding things you can do in an interior, and the formula is simpler than you might think

The key is scale. Combine a larger, bolder pattern with a smaller, more intricate one, and keep at least one or two colours in common between them. Add in a plain or textured cushion as a breathing space, and suddenly the whole arrangement feels intentional rather than chaotic. Our velvet cushions work beautifully for this - the richness of the fabric acts as an anchor, so even the most exuberant pattern feels grounded

Don't underestimate texture

Colour and pattern tend to get all the attention, but texture is just as important - possibly more so in a room that's working with a quieter, more neutral palette. Layering different textures creates depth and warmth in a way that's felt as much as it's seen. Velvet alongside linen, a fringed edge next to a smooth weave, these combinations give a room that quality of having been put together thoughtfully

Size matters more than you think

Cushion sizing is something that often gets overlooked, that's why we recently designed some extra-large cushions to help with sofascapes. A sofa piled with small cushions can look fussy and underwhelming. A single oversized cushion on a chair can look magnificent!

As a general rule, larger sofas need larger cushions — 55cm or 60cm square — to hold their own visually. Smaller sofas and armchairs can take something more modest, around 40cm to 45cm. And if you're going to use a mix of sizes in one arrangement, let the largest cushion set the tone and work down from there

When in doubt, come back to colour

Colour is something we think about every single day  and it never stops being fascinating to me. The way a particular shade of green can make a room feel simultaneously energising and calm. The way a warm terracotta can turn a cold, north-facing room into somewhere you actually want to be. Cushions are one of the easiest and most affordable ways to experiment with colour in your home, and I'd always encourage you to be a little braver than you think you need to be!
