How to Clean and Maintain Velvet Cushions
Keep your luxury Susi Bellamy velvet cushions looking their best
Velvet cushions add an undeniable touch of luxury and sophistication to any space, whether they adorn a cosy couch or elegant armchair. In this guide, we'll delve into how you should be cleaning and maintaining your Susi Bellamy velvet cushions, ensuring they retain their softness and sheen for years to come.
What is our velvet made from?
Our velvet is a polyester velvet, meaning that it contains synthetic fibres. It's ultra soft and has a beautiful sheen to it. At Susi Bellamy, one of our core values is to be practical whilst maintaining the highest quality.
Why did we choose this velvet?
- Polyester velvet is very easy to look after and maintain, requiring minimal effort
- It's extremely soft and tactile
- It has a gorgeous sheen to it, making it look extra luxe!
- It has a martindale / rub count of 60,000, making it hardwearing and perfect for families
Machine washing
Before carrying out any washing or cleaning, remove the feather pad and only clean the cover.
Our velvet cushions are machine washable at 30 degrees as indicated by the care label inside. Use a gentle cycle and a mild detergent.
Wash your velvet cushions on their own.
Hand washing
Whilst our velvet cushions can be machine washed, if you prefer to hand wash, this can be done too.
Firstly, ensure your sink or basin is clean before carrying this out.
Fill your sink up with some lukewarm water (not hot water as this can damage the velvet fabric). Add a small amount of mild detergent and allow the cushion to soak in it for a minute or so, then gently move it around to clean it. Do not scrub the fabric or wring it out. Rinse your cushion cover in cool water until all the detergent has gone.
Lay the velvet cushion cover out flat and press with a dry cloth to get rid of excess water. Do not wring or squeeze it out.
Drying
Once the excess water has been removed from the cushion cover it needs to be left to air dry. The drying spot needs to be away from direct sunlight and heat sources, in a well ventilated area.
Ideally, you need to hang your velvet cushion cover on a washing line, ensuring it's hanging vertically and not creased in any way.
Do not tumble dry.
Spot cleaning
Because our velvet contains synthetic fibres, most spills should be easily rectified.
For small stains or spills, immediately blot the affected area with a clean cloth to absorb as much liquid as possible. Avoid rubbing, as this can spread the stain or damage the fabric. If the stain persists, lightly dampen the cloth with warm water and dab the area, then allow it to air dry.
Maintenance tips
-
Regular Maintenance: To keep velvet cushions looking their best, regularly plump them up. If needed you can remove the feather pad from inside and give this an extra plump and shake, however our velvet cushions are extremely hard wearing and will be absolutely fine if plumped whilst stuffed.
-
Day to Day Maintenance: Hoovering your velvet cushion covers. If you regularly hoover your velvet cushions using a fabric or rug attachment, following the direction of the pile, this can prevent any dust or loose dirt working its way into the fabric.
-
Avoid Direct Sunlight: Direct sunlight is not ideal for any textile, however our velvet cushions have proven to last, whilst they are in front of windows or in conservatories, but we do advise against it generally. To preserve the vibrant colour and texture of your cushions, avoid placing them in direct sunlight or use curtains or blinds to shield them from harsh UV rays.
Velvet cushions add an element of luxury and elegance to any space, but proper care is essential to preserve their beauty and softness. By following these cleaning and maintenance tips, you can ensure your velvet cushions retain their plush allure for years to come, providing comfort and style to your home.
